THOHOYANDOU – Unrest at the University of Venda for Science and Technology led to the suspension of the Students Representative Council (SRC) on Monday.
The SRC was blamed for all unrest and for holding an unauthorized mass meeting on the campus that led to vandalizing of the University’s property.
The Director of Public Relations of Univen, Mr Rufus Kharidzha, said the university was expecting that there would be a student parliament, rather than a mass meeting on the campus. Kharidzha said all students who participated in vandalizing the campus property are going to face intensive disciplinary action.
He added that the University could not change its decision that students have to pay 40% of the tuition fees for registration, against which the students protested. He called on all students to return to the campus.
The President of the SRC, Ms Valerie Maila, said the management of the University suspended the SRC without any consultation with them. “It is a shock to hear that the SRC has been suspended and the University will be going on with classes without theSRC,” she said.
