Woman killed by hippo in Kruger Park

The police in the Mopani area have opened an inquest docket, following the death of a woman who was attacked by a hippo. The incident occurred at the Nsavulani village near the Kruger National Park last Friday afternoon at about 16:00.

Supt Moatshe Ngoepe, the spokesperson for the police in the area, said that the deceased was in the company of her friends when the incident took place. They were busy fishing in the Letaba River. According to the police statement, an angry hippo ermerged from the water and started to chase the women.

The statement indicates that the women ran in different directions, leaving the deceased behind. The angry hippo attacked the helpless woman until she fell down. The deceased was later taken to the nearby clinic by donkey cart.

She was certified dead on arrival. The deceased was identified as Modjajdi Anna Mathevula (45) of Nsavulani village. The police are investigating the matter further.
