World-acclaimed Zimbabwean international artists Oliver ‘Tuku’ Mtukudzi and Andy Brown forced thousands fun lovers to put on their dancing shoes for almost the whole night at the Thohoyandou 2010 Centre on Saturday night.
The extravaganza, dubbed the Intercultural Exchange Music Festival, showcased some of the best talent from South Africa and Zimbabwe. The festival was hosted by the Thohoyandou-based NW Audiovisual Productions.
Music fans could not stop screaming for more as Mtukudzi hit them hard with his internationally celebrated songs like Todii, Neria and Ndima nda pedza. Mtukudzi’s band, The Black Spirits, seemed to have been musically possessed as they played the tunes as if they would never have another chance in life. "We are from Zimbabwe and we love you all. Music is like food which keeps everyone strong. We do not have to sing if there is nothing to sing about," said Tuku while greeting thousands of fans when he ascended the stage.
Tuku’s groaning voice, his unique dancing skills and well-played rhythms made him the darling of his fans during his two-hour performance. Music fans humbly requested him to perform two more extra songs when he was about to leave the stage.
"The man is a true musical giant whose unique talent is so special. I only saw him on the screen or in the papers, but today I am so happy to have seen him performing live. If I die now, I shall die a happy man," said Elmon Tshikhudo jokingly, one of Tuku’s impressed fans.
The music extravaganza became more entertaining when Andy Brown, also from Zimbabwe, mercilessly hit his fans with his famous song, Fiona. His clear and relaxed voice, impressive lead guitar skills and harmonizing keyboards made him an instant hero among his fans.
Jonah Moyo, also from Zimbabwe, left his fans with "broken" spinal chords when they danced his Tshingondo music, including hit songs like Valentine, Devera Ngwene Zhimozhi and 2010. The local Tshingondo music sensation, Whitey Dama, also played to the satisfaction of his fans who cried for more when he left the stage. Patric Wayisa & Silver City Boys, George Maluleke, DJ Khwaya (Tshe-Tsha) and Mitchell Jambo and the Marunga Brothers also left their fans with their mouths wide open during their impressive performances.
NW Audiovisual productions director Mr Robert Mphephu was highly impressed by the huge turnout and support from music lovers. "The show was highly successful and we believe that music fans will support us when we stage big shows like this one in future."
