Man nearly crushed after jumping from train

News  Date: 09 March 2007

A resident from Thohoyandou broke his leg after jumping from a moving train near the railway station in Makhado (Louis Trichardt).

The man, Mr Stanley Netshitakani, was hitching a "free" ride after boarding the train without a ticket in Johannesburg. Local police spokesperson Insp Ndwamato Vele said the man tried to avoid capture by jumping from the train before it game to a standstill.

This was a big mistake on his side. Upon landing, he broke his leg. He was later taken to the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Insp Vele said that this was an isolated case in the area, but that cases of people boarding trains unlawfully and trying to jump from them before they stop are relatively common in the Gauteng area. He warned that this type of behaviour is extremely dangerous.

Referring to this incident, Insp Vele remarked that the man tried to avoid paying for the ticket, and now has to pay much more with regard to medical expenses.
