A sweet-tongued man is on a spree of robbing unsuspecting parents of their hard-earned cash by pretending to be a staff member of the University of Limpopo.
Police are on the heels of one Khathutshelo Freddy Munyai. He is believed to be in his early 30s and police suspect that he is involved in more than six cases of theft under false pretenses, committed in the Thohoyandou area.
Insp Nkanukeni Raedani of the Thohoyandou SAPS says the man is targeting parents who have children attending the University of Limpopo. "The man uses his dirty tricks to get contact numbers of the parents whose children are attending the University of the North. He then calls the parents and tells them that he works at the University of Limpopo and warns them to deposit money for accommodation before their children are expelled from the university. He then gives the parents his personal account number where the money should be deposited. More than six parents have fallen prey to the dirty trick, losing thousands of rands."
Raedani says, at times, the con man arranges meetings with the parents to take the money personally. "He calls them and arranges for separate meetings where he collects the money from them. We urge community members to be aware of this man, although we are very sure that we will arrest him soon."
Raedani added that the man has been avoiding arrest for some time and there is information that he is also sought for a series of rape cases committed within the University of Limpopo. "The man usually gets into the student residence and if he finds two female students in one room, he convinces the one to leave the room, thereby getting a chance to rape the other one. We urge community members to assist us in tracing this man. because he belongs in jail. Those who might know his whereabouts should inform the nearest police station," concluded Raedani.
