Man breaks leg after “falling” from moving truck

News  Date: 06 April 2007

A Zimbabwean man who fell from a moving truck last Thursday and broke his leg in two places was admitted to the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital after being discovered sitting alongside Pretorius Street.

Members of the Soutpansberg Townwatch were alerted to the injured man’s presence in Pretorius Street. Upon arriving at the scene, it was clear that the man’s leg was badly broken and it was suspected that he might have jumped or been thrown from a train.

Both the police and an ambulance were called. The man was then taken to hospital for medical treatment.

According to local police spokesperson Insp Ndwamato Vele, the man later informed the police that he was one of five Zimbabweans travelling on the back of a truck en route to Zimbabwe. Apparently, the man got into a fight on board of the truck. A struggle followed and the man apparently slipped and fell from the moving vehicle.

The truck continued driving and the man, with his badly broken leg, made his way from the Madombizha Road to Pretorius Street, where he was found.

It is believed that the fight started over a disagreement over money that was supposed to be paid by the injured man to another Zimbabwean on the truck. Insp Vele said that no case was opened and at the time of going to press the man was still recovering from his injuries in hospital.
