News  Date: 20 April 2007

Louis Trichardt police managed to foil an attempted cash-in-transit heist on Monday and arrested five heavily armed suspects at the taxi rank in Eltivillas.

The five suspects were arrested after police followed up on crime intelligence information. Two AK 47 assault rifles, loaded with 20 and 25 rounds of ammunition respectively, were found in the suspects’ possession and confiscated. Three vehicles, a Corsa bakkie, a Toyota Corolla and a Volkswagen Jetta, were also confiscated by the police.

According to Supt Mohale Ramatseba, provincial spokesperson for the police in Polokwane, all three vehicles were reported stolen from the Germiston and Littleton area. He said that four of the suspects, aged 26, 31, 32 and 41, were all from Gauteng, while the fifth accomplice is from Zimbabwe.

According to Supt. Ramatsebe, more suspects are expected to be arrested in connection with the planned cash heist. The suspects were to appear before the local magistrate’s court in Louis Trichardt on Wednesday, but no further information could be gathered before going to print.
