A weekend of bloodshed

MOPANI – The police in the Mopani area are investigating several murder cases, following incidents that took place in the area over the past weekend. The first incident took place at Sekgopo Village, where the body of Mr Daniel Mokwena (54) was found lying in the street on Monday morning.

According to the spokesperson for the SAPS in the area, Capt Moatshe Ngoepe, there were visible assault wounds all over the deceased’s body. According to the police statement, there were indications that the deceased might have been killed somewhere else and that the body was dragged to the street where it was found after the killing.

No arrest had been made at the time of going to press, while the police are investigating the matter.

On Saturday night at Runnymaid village in the Letsitele area, a 25-year-old man, Abram Shiburi, produced a firearm at a local drinking place and threatened to kill everyone.

The people who were drinking beer allegedly mobilized and started attacking him with various objects. He was taken to the nearby hospital where he later died. The police have arrested one suspect in connection with the incident. He was still to appear in court at the time of going to press.

Still at Letsitele, on Sunday morning at about 07:00, Miss Nkhensani Manganyi (30), was allegedly taken from her home by her boyfriend. They went to the nearby citrus farm where the suspect allegedly started attacking her with various objects in full view of her 8-year-old daughter. She died on the spot. The suspect vanished after the incident. The police traced him and arrested him on Monday night. He was still to appear in court at the time of going to the press. The suspect is a 21-year-old man.

At Nwamatatani village in the Hlanganani area, a 15-year-old boy, Chester Makhubele was busy drinking beer with a friend at a local tavern last Friday evening at about 18:00. While drinking, an argument ensued between the two. During the argument, the suspect produced a knife and stabbed the deceased in the chest. He was taken to the local clinic where he was certified dead on arrival.

According to the police statement, the deceased and the suspect were classmates at a local high school. The suspect vanished after the incident and was still at large at the time of going to press. The police have appealed to anyone with information regarding the case to contact the nearest police station.
