"Ritual murder is an abominable, cruel and violent act which all of us must not only condemn, but actively work towards its total eradication. Just because it has been around this long does not justify its continued practice. The fact that it continues to ravage our communities, particularly in the Vhembe District, is an indictment on all of us for failing to combat this very serious social crime."
These were the powerful words of the MEC for Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr Samson Ratshivhanda Ndou, when speaking to police officers, civic leaders, traditional leaders, pastors and representatives of the Mutale Municipality, during his visit to Tshandama Royal Palace on Sunday.
"However, these murders continue to occur unabated and are not only confined to this district alone, but it continues to brutalize our communities throughout the province, the country and even the continent. We must say with confidence that enough is enough and that the perpetrators of these evil deeds have all the reason to be very afraid and to run. They all deserve to be locked in jail for the rest of their lives, " he said.
MEC Ndou said there is a need for cooperation between the police and community structures to fight crime. "The criminal activities are committed by the immediate members of our communities and it is our duty to report any criminal activity to the police. If you don’t report those criminal activities, it means you are collaborating with the criminals." He encouraged community members to get an education so that they might be able to face life with courage. "If we don’t go to school, we end up committing crime and it is best to acquire education to become self-dependent."
He praised the police officers who are doing a wonderful job of combating crime. "There are men and women in our police services who are dedicated to maintaining law and order. However, they could never achieve this alone if they do not get assistance from community members."
