The ANC’s former military wing in Limpopo, the Umkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA), said that they will support the candidacy of Mr Jacob Zuma if he is nominated and available for the party´s presidency.
The MK veterans passed this resolution during their provincial general council meeting that they held at LaNdou Guest House a fortnight ago. Very soon, the ANC will hold its policy conference, while its elective national conference will be held in December in the province.
Part of the resolutions passed during the MK veterans´ two-day council was that, as an offshoot of the liberation struggle, they should participate and engage with the ANC at all levels in order to protect the gains of the freedom struggle.
The provincial secretary of the MK veterans in Limpopo, Mr Ramauku Maphutha, said the government should review the age limit for the implementation of the special pension due to military veterans.
He added that the state should also devise a means to provide financial and medical support to all veterans of the liberation struggle who are unemployed and have no other means of survival.
Maphutha said that the country needs to have a compulsory national service for the youth. "Members of the MK veterans not currently in the security forces should be ranked accordingly and then encouraged to join the Reserve Force. Deserving MK veterans should be honoured with relevant military medals," he said. In order to develop South Africa, both economically and socially, the MK veterans said higher and technical education should be made accessible to the masses, without considering the ability to pay.
