Many women would have depended on the fortune and popularity of their husbands rather than work towards their own financial independence. The opposite is the case for the wife of the well-known South African reggae legend Khakhathi Tshisikule.
Ms Naledzani Tshisikule, commonly known as Mia Zwothe, said she decided to create her own job by starting a small business, rather than depend on the musical success of her husband.
She cooks food on the pavement in central Thohoyandou where she feeds dozens of her hungry customers on a daily basis. The formerly unemployed Naledzani has roped in Ndiafhi Mukosi (22) who could also not find a job for three years, before she became part of the cooking business. They specialize in preparing pap, meat and salads.
"My husband has worked hard to build up his musical career and he deserves a pat on the shoulder for that. Who am I to rely on his achievements, rather than do something for myself? As a family, we work as a unit and jointly provide for the family, but I felt that I must also play a meaningful role."
Naledzani says it took years for her to find employment. "Although my husband could provide everything, I had the zeal that I must also work hard to gain financial independence. I knocked on doors countless times, looking for employment, but I could not succeed. I then decided to start my own cooking business here in central Thohoyandou."
She admits it was not easy when she started her business: "People did not know me at first but I persevered until I developed a good relationship with them. I now have a base of customers whom I serve on a daily basis. I encourage other women to wake up and do something for themselves because the democratic South Africa is full of opportunities."
