The 23 year-old Zimbabwean suspect, Sydney Mathebula (23), who has been on the run for almost two months after fleeing from his bed at the Musina Hospital, was finally arrested on Saturday, 14 July, by Zimbabwean police in Beitbridge town.
Police spokesman in Beitbridge Insp Goodwill Chigudu said the suspect was arrested at Dulibadzimu bus terminus in Beitbridge while trying to board a bus to travel to his rural home in Gwanda area. "We arrested the suspect, following a public tip-off and our police members then went to the bus terminus, where they subsequently arrested him. We would like to thank community members for complementing us in fighting crime," he said.
Shortly after he was arrested, Mathebula then escaped again through a cage opening while in police cells at Beitbridge Police station. However, this time his luck run as he was eventually re-arrested a few hours after the escape.
The suspect has been on the run since 30 May. He was being treated at the hospital after he was arrested for allegedly stealing copper wire around Musina.
Musina SAPS spokeswoman Const Deborah Bob last week told Mirror that they were offering a reward of R2 000 to people who could assist police with information that would lead to his arrest. SAPS had also distributed posters of Mathebula in Zimbabwe.
