Louis Trichardt, described as a town "with a positive cycling vibe", now has two cycling clubs.
The ‘mother’ club, P&L Hardware Cycling Club,. grew from 17 members in 2004 to 213 members in 2006.
This week, a new cycling club was born and the ‘baby’ has yet to be named.
The founding meeting for the new cycling club took place on Monday, July 16. Some 47 cyclists expressed interest in becoming members of the new club.
"A committee will be formed shortly to manage club affairs, including that of naming the club and designing club kit," said one of the organisers, Sean Brennan. Sean is known in sports circles for his Zero to Hero Programmes which encourage couch potatoes to become sports enthusiasts.
The new club caters for both road cyclists and mountain bikers of all levels, with regular fun rides and training.
"An exciting programme will begin shortly for those wishing to participate in Johannesburg’s 94.7 Road Race on November 18. The programme caters for all, from novice ‘couch potatoes’ to speed freaks, and is sure to have you at your best on race day," says Sean.
Why another cycling club in town?
Sean explained that he was talking about his training programmes and cyclist Japie van Heerden about his desire to sponsor a racing team, when people started phoning and said they heard that Sean and Japie were starting a new cycling club and they wanted to join it.
"That’s how it actually began. It wasn’t intentional. We saw a need and decided to fill it," Sean said.
"We don’t want to run the new club heavy-handedly. I don’t even want to be in the top management, but do my part in the training programmes," Sean said the day after the founding of the club.
The new club’s fees will be about R100 per year.
"This includes the fee for a cycling license and an administrative fee for receiving club news letters and notification of club events via SMS," says Sean.
All interested mountain bikers are invited to contact Mark on 083 324 8495 and road cyclists to contact Japie on 083 299 0989 for more information. Sean can be contacted on 083 377 4670.
