MAKHADO (LOUIS TRICHARDT) – A farm manager was completely shocked when an orange flew from a 4x4 double cab and smashed the windscreen of his bakkie.
Mr Morris Maswangane is the farm manager of the farm Soft Water, belonging to Mr Michael Holford, situated in the vicinity of the Albasini Dam.
On September 25, the unsuspecting Mr Maswangane was driving in his bakkie on the Louis Trichardt/Thohoyandou Road. He was some 23 kilometres away from Louis Trichardt en route to Thohoyandou, when a 4x4 double cab bakkie came from the opposite direction and its driver or passengers threw an orange out of the window, straight into the windscreen of Mr Maswangane’s bakkie. The incident happened at about 13:20.
Mr Holford, leader of the Democratic Alliance in the Limpopo Province, said that he found it very unfortunate that an old bakkie was attacked by people in a 4x4 double cab. He said that, whether the orange was thrown unintentionally or on purpose, it was still irrational behaviour.
“The fact is that his windscreen got hit by the orange and was smashed. If it was unintentional, then people are careless and they do not worry what is thrown out of a window. If it was on purpose, it was irrational behaviour. Either way, those who threw should be strong enough to own up or to say that it was a mishap and help cover the costs,” said Mr Holford.
Mr Maswangane said that the 4x4 vehicle just drove on. He called the police. However, the police were unable to act, as he could not provide them with a registration number.
“I am very unhappy. It is the first time that I encounter such a thing. They just threw it. I don’t know whether they were drunk or not. I don’t know whether they are farmers who see me at the farm meetings, who did this to me,” Maswangane said.
The total cost to repair the windscreen was R862.
