A 22-year-old pregnant woman from Beitbridge was killed while five other South Africans were seriously injured when two vehicles they were travelling in were involved in a head-on collision along Beitbridge-Masvingo Road in Zimbabwe, police said.
The officer commanding police at Beitbridge, Chief Superintendent Nicholas Mawere, said the incident occurred on Sunday, 23 September, at around 19:40 about 3km outside Beitbridge town.
"The deceased, Chenesai Gapare, was travelling in a Nissan Sunny with her husband who was driving and they were heading towards Beitbridge. Her husband lost control of the car and it encroached onto the lane of oncoming traffic, resulting in a head-on collision with a Gauteng-registered Nissan Hardbody bakkie, with five passengers, all South Africans," he said.
Mawere said the five victims were rushed to Beitbridge District Hospital, while the deceased’s body was taken to the hospital mortuary. "We would like to urge motorists to be extra-cautious whenever traveling, especially at night, to avoid such accidents and loss of life."
The latest accident comes barely three weeks after another 36-year-old South African man died when the vehicle, a Ford Bantam; he was travelling in veered off the road before ramming into a tree along the Beitbridge- Bulawayo. The incident occurred near Mbalabala area.
