Lutendo David Mathobo (23), better known as Masimbe, is the best praise singer in the country.

This was announced during the finals of the South African Traditional Music Awards (SATMA) held at Durban ICC Hall last week. Masimbe made everyone happy when he came back with a special trophy and cash.

The young poet, who resides at Tshifulanani, west of Thohoyandou, entered the competition with his album, Tshumisano. The track that left the judges with no other alternative is Thambatshira. He entered the competition through Phalaphala FM, which gave listeners the opportunity to SMS the artist of their choice in the 24 categories.

Masimbe says he owes his success to his supporters who never became tired of sending SMSes for his success. "I wouldn’t have achieved this on my won and I thank everyone who played a role in what I am today. My heartfelt gratitude goes to members of the Rhema Kingdom Life and Calvary Christian Church for their support. I will never forget to thank Phalaphala FM for giving me the opportunity to realise my potential. It is also important to thank Khumbe Poulty Farm and the entire South African nation for standing behind me."

Masimbe launched his career some years back when he was still a learner at Lwamondo High School. "Everyone was impressed by my poetry talent and I decided to take it a step further. My teachers would ask me to entertain guests when there were social events at school and my fellow learners would never stop encouraging me."

Masimbe said the important move in his career came when he went to the studio to record his debut album, Vhudele ho balela pfene, in 2005. "Although Vhudele ho balela pfene was still in a massive demand, I went back to the studio last year to record Tshumisano, the album which won the current competition with the track Thambatshira. To be the best praise singer in the country makes me proud but I will never allow fame to go to my head."

He says he is busy with his next project, named Mahandana, which will be a thank you offer to all the people who contributed to his award. "There is a strong possibility that I will feature Mzwakhe Mbuli on the album, which will be released not so long."
