News  Date: 12 October 2007

A 40-year-old woman from Matswale suburb in Musina was fatally hit by a transport truck while trying cross the N1 Highway, police said.

The Musina SAPS spokeswoman, Const Deborah Bob, said the incident occurred on Friday at around 16:45 in the Musina CBD area. "The woman was coming from Musina Spar and trying to cross the busy N1 highway when she was hit by a truck. The truck had stopped at a four-way intersection and we suspect the deceased had miscalculated, resulting in her being hit by the heavy vehicle," she said.

Bob said the woman, whom she identified as Johanna Khatha, sustained severe injuries to the neck, abdomen and waist. She was rushed to Musina hospital, where she died a few minutes later.

"We have since opened a culpable homicide case, following the incident and again as police we would like to urge both motorists and pedestrians to be extra cautious when using our roads to avoid such incidents," said the police spokeswoman.
