Awards for the best cultural dancers

The MEC for the Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Mr Collins Chabane, has said traditional and cultural dances must be transformed into business activities.

He was addressing guests during the first award ceremony of Zwashu Indigenous and Cultural Dance Organization. The function was held at The Palace Guest House activity grounds in Thohoyandou last Friday night.

The elimination rounds of the competitions took place in different venues for the past six months with Tshikona, Malende and Tshigombela dancers battling for supremacy without compromise. The finals, where the top 10 groups in the three categories competed, took place at Makwarela Stadium a fortnight ago. Not only the top 10 groups were awarded, but all the groups that took part in the competitions were compensated during the function.

Chabane said it was important to sharpen cultural standards to preserve African customs and dignity. He said culture and tradition can be used to generate business activities. "Through the traditional dances, we can unearth talent in rural areas because we are duty-bound to conserve our heritage. One of the highest forms of art is through traditional dances and cultural activities. There is a lot of value in the music played by Venda people which has not been transformed to match the modern music world."

Chabane said traditional dance is one of the ways that can be used to fight poverty and create employment. "To those who came up with the idea of the competition, they are visionaries who must be complimented for their foresight. We cannot just sit and watch while our culture fades from us. I will not forget to congratulate those awarded, the sponsors and everyone who contributed to this initiative."

One of the brains behind the initiative, the late Mr Hendrick Nenngwekhulu, was posthumously awarded for his contributions in the development of Venda culture.
