Disco heavyweight laid to rest

News  Date: 26 October 2007

Thousands of mourners turned up to pay their last respect to a disco musician who was laid to rest last Saturday at Magoro, east of Elim.

As South Africa and the world at large have been hit by an unbelievable shockwave, following the death of reggae legend Lucky Dube, another Shangaan musical heavyweight is no more. Peter Hlungwani passed away two weeks ago after a short illness. It is another sad loss to the followers of disco music after Mhaka-Mhakeni was also buried two months ago at Malamulele. His death came as a shock to his fans who were still expecting more from him.

During the funeral service, Peter’s death was described as a great loss to the community and the whole nation. "He was a friendly person who loved people; despite the fact that he was a famous artist, he never considered himself a superior but he lived an ordinary life," said one of the mourners.

The veteran disco musician, Thomas Chauke (Shinyori), described Peter as an irreplaceable icon whose music was unique. "He composed and played songs in his own style," said Shinyori. He further urged the masses to avoid buying fake CDs and cassettes as it negatively impacts the music industry.

A representative from Munghana Lonene FM, Mr Ali Maluleke, told the fans that even though Peter had passed away, his music will live forever; he promised fans that his music would be played as usual to heal the wounds of his fans. He further encouraged other artists to unite themselves by forming an organization that will represent them in all levels

There were at least twenty musicians who had come to bid goodbye to their fellow artist who died at the age of 39. Peter’s first album was recorded 17 years ago, way back in 1989, called Mbhuri Number 1. From that time Peter never looked back, but he continued with his career to release another 13 albums.

Peter Hlungwani is survived by his wife, three children and his mother.
