News  Date: 10 August 2023

Learners and educators at Makushu Primary School in Musina have been dealt a serious blow by a burglary at the school, where thieves made off with two safes from the main office. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, 31 July.

Preliminary police investigations have revealed that three armed men confronted the school’s security officer and tied him up. The assailants gained entry to the main office by breaking the door and proceeded to rummage through the room in search of valuable items. The thieves successfully got away with two safes. Both safes were later discovered discarded in the school yard.

Limpopo police spokesperson Col Malesela Ledwaba confirmed the incident and stated that a case of armed robbery had been opened.

The school principal, Mr Emmanuel Luvhengo, said that the theft would impact the learning and teaching environment at the school negatively. “The heartless criminals took approximately 46 tablets intended for the learners, as well as a laptop that was used in conjunction with the tablets. We are devastated. Adding to our distress, the thieves also broke into the staffroom. We are currently assessing the extent of the damage and the items that were stolen from there. We appeal to the community to report any signs of suspiciously acquired items being sold. These criminals are among us. Let us collaborate with the police and deny them a haven to operate and hide,” he stated.

The theft was strongly condemned by Provincial Police Commissioner Lt Genl Thembi Radebe, who emphasised that the safety and security of the community’s educational institutions were of utmost importance to the SAPS. “We are diligently working to identify and apprehend those responsible for this audacious act. We urge anyone with relevant information concerning this incident to come forward and assist us in our investigation. All information provided will be treated with the highest level of confidentiality,” she said.
