MAKHADO – An amount of R50 000 was put up as reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the murder of the 66-year-old Mr Armitage.
Mr Armitage’s body was discovered at the main entrance gate to his farm Melkhoutkopjes on the Fort Edward Road on October 1. He died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.
Police last week issued a R25 000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrators. Family and community members subsequently doubled the amount to R50 000. In the mean time the 19-year-old Zim-babwean, Themba Chirume again appeared in court on Monday, following the double murder and armed robbery of the Hayward couple at their home at the Mountain View Hotel on October 20. His case was postponed until January 7 next year for further investigation.
Chirume was arrested near Thohoyandou just days after the incident. In an admission of guilt, Chirume implicated two other suspects, namely his brother Sebastiaan Chirume and Jason Chaphebha. Both men are from Zimbabwe and are known to frequent the Mavhunga RDP housing complex in the Dzanani area. Andries joined the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror in April 1993 as a darkroom assistant. Within a couple of months he moved over to the production side of the newspaper and eventually doubled as a reporter. In 1995 he left the newspaper group and travelled overseas for a couple of months. In 1996, Andries rejoined the Zoutpansberger as a reporter. In August 2002, he was appointed as News Editor of the Zoutpansberger, a position he holds until today.
