Rural communities benefit from donkey workshop

News  Date: 23 November 2007

Donkeys are commonly used by communal farmers as draft animals and are invaluable to these farmers for ploughing, collecting water, firewood and general transport. They are, however, often neglected and some of the biggest problems are wounds and exhaustion from improper hitching equipment and techniques.

Recently, the owners of donkeys from Nthabalala, Muila and Tshitale attended a workshop at Last Post Private Nature Reserve. The workshop on harnessing and hitching techniques was facilitated by the Department of Agriculture, Veterinary Services, the SPCA Louis Trichardt and the Last Post Private Nature Reserve.

Dr Peta Jones from the South African National Animal Traction group presented a very interesting talk on harnessing and hitching techniques for donkeys. Mr Lawrence Khobodo from the SPCA Louis Trichardt acted as an interpreter.

Harnessing and hitching techniques were discussed and followed by a hands-on practical session where the participants learned how to tie head ropes and to braid their own harness straps, using plastic bags. Proper hitching techniques were demonstrated on donkeys that came all the way from Nthabalala.

The practical session was followed by lunch, after which a lucky draw was held and the participants could win some stock remedies and dips. A follow-up workshop is planned for early next year.

The organisers wish to thank Last Post Private Nature Reserve for sponsoring the venue and lunch, Kyron Laboratories for the prizes and Spar Elim for their donation.
