The South African music industry will never be same again. This comes after a Zimbabwean internationally acclaimed sound engineer and gospel musician decided to share his skills with the locals in Thohoyandou.
The highly skilled Jonathan Mgazi (29), who has travelled to London, Japan, Holland and Germany, has joined the Thohoyandou-based NW Audiovisual Music Production.
His long overdue arrival brings hope that there will be improvement in the engineering of Tshingondo music as many artists used to travel to record their albums in Zimbabwe because of the shortage of Tshingondo music engineers in South Africa.
Jonathan has travelled all the way from Chitungwiza, South of Harare, to venture into the tough South African music industry. A great man in his own class, Jonathan is one of the top-selling gospel artists in Zimbabwe and he is going to receive a NAMA Award from the Zimbabwean government at the end of this month for his contribution in the development of music in Zimbabwe.
Before coming to South Africa, the sound engineering genius worked for Zimbabwe’s biggest record company, Gramma Records. He said he was forced to take the initiative of coming to South Africa after realizing that there was a great shortage of Tshingondo engineers in South Africa.
He continued: "I decided to come here after meeting Jonah Moyo and Whitey Dama, who came to record an album in Zimbabwe. They then told me about the challenges in South African studios and I decided to come to their rescue. I will definitely make a difference and this will simplify the lives of countless South Africans who travel long distances to record their music in Zimbabwe."
Jonathan has six chart-busting gospel albums under his belt which were recorded and released in Zimbabwe. They are Shumirai, Tendai kuna Baba, Tinotenda, Mwari Variko, Mumomato Wangu and Taurai Mwari. He has also recently released a DVD which consists of the hits from his previous albums.
