The Limpopo Director of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Dr Joe Phaahla, said that the opportunity for holding the World Cup extends beyond football, because it is a catalyst for change and a lifetime opportunity for the country and the African continent.
Phaahla was addressing journalists at the University of Venda last week.
He said that the 2010 World Cup will help to build national pride, unity, promote African solidarity and market the country to the world. He warned community members to take advantage of the opportunity because there would be much to gain, as far as economy is concerned.
Phaahla said South Africa will enjoy domestic and global media platform and the biggest audience of any sporting event. "The awarding of the 2010 World Cup to South Africa saw an unprecedented leap in government and consumer confidence. The recent successful preliminary draw noted in local and international media is proof that we will be able to host the 2010 world cup successfully."
He said that the success of the 2010 world cup will depend on the partnerships across the society. "This is an opportunity for everyone of us and we need to work together to make it a success."
Although many things have been achieved towards the preparations of the World Cup, he said that there are still challenges that need to be addressed. "There are negative messages on the state of the readiness on infrastructure development and we still have a challenge about the readiness of the national team. There are persistent messages on safety and security matters and pessimism on South Africa and the African continent."
