Gunmen flee without cash “prize”

News  Date: 11 January 2008

One of four armed gunmen was wounded during a gunfight which ensued shortly after an attempted cash-in-transit robbery took place on the Thohoyandou Road, near the Piesanghoek turnoff.

The security vehicle, belonging to the G4 security group, was delivering a large sum of money from Louis Trichardt to Thohoyandou when armed men from a white Nissan Sentra opened fire on the security van.

The security Van was forced to come to a stop at the Piesanghoek turnoff, after its tyres were shot out by the armed gunmen.

Shortly after stopping, the security guards from the van bravely started exchanging fire with the armed gunmen.

One of the suspects was wounded and the gunmen were forced to retreat, without the cash "prize".

According to Capt Maano Sadike, local police spokesperson at Louis Trichardt, police rushed to the scene and a manhunt for the four suspects was launched.

Capt Sadike said the police are still to arrest the suspects and that the community’s help will be highly appreciated to assist the police with any information.

Anyone with any information regarding the suspects can phone the police´s toll-free number at tel. 0860010111.
