Woman seriously injured in stabbing incident

News  Date: 22 February 2008

Last Wednesday, a day before the so-called Lover´s Day, Ha-Maelula Village witnessed bloody domestic violence when a 24-year-old man allegedly stabbed his 23-year-old girlfriend several times until she collapsed.

According to Captain Maano Sadike of the Makhado SAPS Communication and Liaison Services, the man went to his girlfriend’s home at Maelula at about 07:30. Sadike said it is still unknown what caused the man’s anger. He is alleged to have stabbed his lover several times until she collapsed as a result of the multiple stab wounds.

"The victim was rushed to a local hospital, but was later transferred to Mankweng Hospital. We don’t know whether the two had differences prior to this incident, which is a setback in as far as violence against women is concerned," he said.

The Makhado police arrested the man a few hours after the incident. When he appeared before the Louis Trichardt magistrate’s court on a charge of attempted murder on last Friday, his case was postponed to March 5 and he was not granted bail. Sadike said that the suspect, who was not asked to plead, will be in police custody until his next appearance in the same court.
