Zambian citizen killed in truck accident

News  Date: 07 March 2008

A 26-year-old Zambian man was killed while another one sustained serious injuries when a haulage truck they were travelling in veered off the road before it overturned along the Musina-Alldays road, police have said.

The Musina SAPS spokeswoman, Const DJ Bob, said the accident occurred on Sunday, March 2, at around 06:30, about 40km outside Musina.

"The truck was coming from Alldays and heading towards Musina and we suspect the driver lost control of the heavy vehicle, resulting in its veering off the road and overturning," she said. Bob said the victim, Gift Manyika, died on the spot while the driver, also a Zambian national, escaped with severe injuries.

The body of the deceased was taken to the Musina government mortuary while the driver was admitted at the local hospital. A case of culpable homicide has since been opened against the driver of the truck.

"We urge motorists to avoid speeding and be extra cautious to avoid such incidents in which lives are lost," said the police spokeswoman.
