Many road users and members of the community have expressed their concern about the small bridge between Majosi and Madobi which causes a lot of accidents from time to time.
This follows an accident in which a car which was being driven by an Ethiopian citizen missed the bridge and fell into the river. The accident happened last Thursday afternoon and the driver of the car managed to survive, but he was rushed to hospital for treatment of serious head injuries. The car plunged upside-down onto a rocky surface from the bridge with a height of about five meters. The driver, Mr Thomas Thangasi, was lucky to survive as his car was wrecked beyond repair.
Many serious accidents are reported to have occurred at the same bridge, but nothing much has been done to improve the bridge so far. People from the nearby communities who managed to arrive at the accident scene blamed the government for ignorance. "Our government is doing nothing about this bridge. They will only react when many people have died," said one of the members of community, who wished to remain anonymous.
According to police’s accident report from Hlanganani SAPS, the car in which the driver was alone was heading for Madobi when the accident happened. It is suspected that the driver lost the control of his vehicle and it slipped off the bridge. The bridge, which is used by many cars, is said to have been constructed many years ago and has developed serious cracks which need to be considered, perhaps with immediate effect.
