Polokwane resident killed in Zimbabwe

News  Date: 28 March 2008

A 35-year-old resident of Polokwane, Mr Mackson Ndishavelafhi Ndou, was killed while another one was seriously injured when the car they were traveling in veered off the road and overturned along the Beit Bridge-Masvingo road in Zimbabwe, police have said.

The police spokesman for Matabeleland South province, Insp Tafanana Dzirutwe, said the incident occurred on Saturday, 15 March, at around 20:00 at the 278km peg, near the Gwanda area.

"Mr Ndou was driving a Nissan bakkie. He lost control of the vehicle and it then went off the road, before overturning and subsequently landing on its roof. He died on the spot," he said.

The car had three people on board and was coming from Bulawayo and heading towards Beitbridge en-route to South Africa.

"We suspect the car was speeding, which could have resulted in the victim’s losing control of the steering wheel and again as police we also don’t rule out the element of fatigue on the part of the driver, since he had been traveling at night," said the police spokesman.

He also urged motorists to desist from speeding, saying the country’s roads were too narrow, adding that stray animals were a common sight along the highways.
