The SABC Limpopo Combo, in partnership with the Department of Housing and Local Government, came to the rescue of the Rampampa family in the Guyuni Mutale area on Friday, when they built them a house.
The Rampampa family had been living in a dilapidated mud house since the flood of 2000. The poverty-stricken family of five was later accommodated in a tent which was provided by the Mutale Municipality. Ms Mushaisano Rampampa (59) depends on a social grant for her disabled son.
The Rampampa family benefitted from the Celebrity Build a House, an initiative launched by SABC Limpopo, Faranani Properties and Department of Local Government and Housing, which was started last year in Ha-Mashashane.
The house builders were led by the MEC of Local Housing, Maite Nkoana Mashabane, SABC regional manager Victor Ravhaunzwo, Phala Phala FM station manager Freddy Sadiki, Thobela FM station manager Leuba Ramakgolo and acting station manager of Munghanalonene FM, Tshamaano Nepfumbada, and other SABC staff members.
Rampampa said that her family survived by selling firewood. She said that she never thought that she would own a house one day. She thanked the SABC Limpopo who saw her need with her disabled son when they donated a wheelchair to him. She was happy that she no longer needed to carry her son from one spot to another.
MEC Maite Nkona Mashabane said the government was aware that there were still people who were living in dilapidated houses.
The Limpopo regional manager of SABC, Mr Victor Ravhaunzwo, said that the SABC Limpopo cared about the people who lost hope in life, "but as the broadcaster we sit down and look what we can do to help the people who need assistance."
