The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) in Vhembe has issued a media statement, in which the members insist that the squabbling between the various factions inside the Makhado Municipality is seriously influencing service delivery to the people on the ground. The organization insists that the mayor, municipal manager and chief whip resign immediately.
At the media briefing held by the organization on Wednesday, the chairperson, Mr Khathu Mapholi, indicated that a lot of dissatisfaction exists about the way in which the town and its finances are being handled by those in charge. The ANCYL is not interested in the in-fighting between the various people, but "is only concerned about service delivery on the ground". It launches a direct attack on the mayor, Cllr Glory Mashaba, the municipal manager, Ms Faith Muthambi, and the chief whip of Council, Mr Rufus Selepe, accusing them of gossiping and squabbling. It warns them not to "forget that you are not there to represent yourself," but to serve the interests of the people. The ANCYL points out that the town itself is riddled with potholes and the general condition of the area as the gateway to Zimbabwe and the rest of Africa is constantly deteriorating. It expresses the hope that Council will be able to put its house in order, but questions whether or not this will actually happen. This is partly due, according to them, to the unauthorized expenditure incurred by the mayor and the municipal manager when they went to China, as well as nepotism and tribalism. It reiterates that its role is to "ensure that our people must get what they deserve in their respective communities".
Another reason offered by the ANCYL why the mayor should be relieved of her duties is the fact that no conducive working environment exists in the municipality, since the mayor "call[s] employees to her office questioning them in which camp (Mbeki v/s Zuma) … they belong to". The accusation is that various people are trying to push their own political agendas, instead of concentrating on the mandate given to them when they assumed office, which is to facilitate service delivery and ensure good governance.
