Accident claims first fatality for July

News  Date: 11 July 2008

An accident on the Thohoyandou Road late Tuesday afternoon claimed the life of a young mother who, together with her young child, had hitched a ride with a motorist to Louis Trichardt.

The accident occurred about 25km from town. The mother and child were picked up by a motorist. Unfortunately, the motorist’s good deed turned to tragedy when she lost control of her vehicle, after which it overturned. The mother, who apparently fell from the vehicle, died on the scene, while her injured child was rushed to hospital.

The accident brought about the first fatality for July on roads within the Louis Trichardt Fire Brigade’s area of jurisdiction. From July 3 to 8, seven vehicle accidents were attended to by local rescue workers, three of which occurred in town. According to the divisional manager for the Louis Trichardt fire brigade, Mr Jack Ramalatso, most of the accidents could be contributed to driver negligence.

What is keeping the local fire brigade very busy at present, however, is the number of veldt fires they get called out to. Mr Ramalatso said that, from the beginning of July until Wednesday morning, they had already attended to 19 veldt fires. He said a further two fire fighting vehicles were put on standby to help out if needed. The current dry and windy situation is a recipe for disaster and residents are urged to take precautions when making fires in the open.
