Province´s water situation stable, but dams continue to dry up

News  Date: 11 July 2008

The Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF) in Limpopo has indicated that the water situation in Limpopo is currently stable, although the dry season with decreased flows and no rainfall still causes surface and ground water to decrease.

A major concern seems to by the Middle Letaba Dam, which is hovering around the 10% level. As a measure to deal with the situation, Tzaneen Municipality has imposed irrigation restrictions and boreholes around the area have been tested and have been found to be of an acceptable quality. The DWAF has also conducted an investigation on the possible obstruction in the area upstream of Middle Letaba. A report in this regard will be released after July 20.

“As far as the Nandoni Dam is concerned, the dam is 100% full and the purification plant is still under construction. The dam will be completed in December 2008. This will help in alleviating water shortages around Vhembe District,” the department stated.

As for the other major dams in the area, the Albasini Dam’s level as Louis Trichardt’s main source of drinking water was on Monday, July 7, indicated as 35,6%. This is slightly lower then the 36% last week. Last year this time, the dam was 42,4% full. On Monday, the Nzhelele Dam’s level showed a decrease from last week and measured 75,8%, while the levels of the Tate Vondo, Nwanedi and Luphephe dams were 93%, 91,1% and 92,6% respectively. All showed a decrease from last week.

Further afield, the level of the Flag Boshielo Dam (Arabie) was 101.1% on Monday. Tzaneen Dam was 65% full, while the Glen Alpine Dam’s level was 78,9%. The level of the Nsami Dam (Giyani) was 57,9%. Again, all of these dam levels showed a small decrease from Monday last week.
