Vhembe District indigenous games a huge success

The Vhembe District Municipality successfully held the district indigenous games at the Louis Trichardt Show Grounds last Saturday.

The four municipalities of Vhembe, namely, Musina, Thulamela, Makhado and Mutale, competed against each other in the indigenous games such as Muravharavha, Khokho, Khadi, Ndode, Intonga, Jukskei and Duvheke.

Players from various categories were selected to represent the district in the provincial indigenous games.

According to the manager of the games, Mr Colbert Nempumbuluni, the turnout during the games was satisfactory compared to the previous years. “It is good to see that the games are gaining momentum. We hope that participants will come in numbers next year,” he said.

Nempumbuluni said the selected players were going to represent the district in the provincial games that are going to take place in Polokwane at a date still to be announced. “This is where all the five district of Limpopo are going to compete against each other, where the winners will participate at national level,” he added.

In the Khokho category, six players from Makhado were selected and five each from Mutale, Musina and Thulamela, and in the Khadi category, two players each from Mutale and Makhado were selected to represent the district in the provincial games. 

All four players in the Ndode category are from Makhado and in the Muravharavha category, two players were selected from Makhado and one each from Musina and Mutale. In the Duvheke category, seven Makhado residents were selected, five from Thulamela and three each from Mutale and Musina. In the Intonga category, two players each from Thulamela and Makhado were selected as well as a player from Mutale and one from Musina.

The Vhembe district is known for having produced Mrs Mavis Nephalama, who was selected the best woman in Muravharavha at the national level.
