The victims of last year’s Luvhalani bus accident received their compensation money, collected in a trust fund account that was opened by the Makhado Municipality after the accident, at an event that was held at the Makhado Multi-purpose Centre last Sunday.

The 57 injured victims and family members of the 19 victims who passed away during the accident, which happened on February 19, received the compensation money. According to the spokesperson of the Makhado Municipality, Mr Louis Bobodi, the money that was collected through the trust fund account was R307 589 79. “We really appreciated the contributions of businesspeople and individuals. We wish that people could continue assisting each other in situations like these,” he said.

It was indicated in the report which is in the possession of Mirror that the municipal council contributed R30 000 to the fund. The 53 people who were injured during the accident received R4 156 per person, while the families of the 19 people who passed away in the accident, received R3500.

Apart of the compensation money from the trust fund, the victims were said to be going to receive compensation from the Road Accident Fund, issued by the Department of Roads and Transport.

One of the injured victims who spoke to Mirror, Mrs Anna Luvhengo, indicated that accident had affected her a lot as she even lost her job, due to the fact that she is no longer fit to work. Luvhengo, who was working as a domestic worker in Louis Trichardt, is now depending on a pension grant. “It is very difficult to survive with the little money I receive from the government grant. The food prices are very high now and the money I get doesn’t buy enough basic foods,” she said.
