The Tshilwavhusiku police have arrested a police inspector who was allegedly found in possession of dagga, after they were tipped off on Monday this week.

Insp Solomon Mukwevho (43), a resident of Matidza Village in the Dzanani area, and his friend, Mathews Mmbidi, a resident of Ha-Mphaila, were arrested after a long police chase. The two suspects were allegedly spotted distributing dagga at Tshiozwi village in the Sinthumule area. After having noticed that the police were following them, they started driving at high speed. The police chased them until they arrested them at Midoroni Village in the Kutama area.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Tshilwavhusiku police, Insp Tshililo Mamburu, indicated that the incident happened at about 11:40. He added that other police officials who were patrolling in the area tipped them off. “We then followed the suspects who were traveling in a white City Golf. After a very long chase, we eventually arrested them. We searched the car and recovered 10 arms of dagga. The dagga weighed 5.75 kg,” he said.

Mamburu further revealed that they were shocked to discover that one of the suspects, Solomon Mukwevho, was a member of the SAPS attached to the Pondrift border police.  “We were very ashamed to discover that Mukwevho was a member of the SAPS and he was engaging himself in criminal activities. It is very bad for the police to engage themselves in such criminal activities rather than to protect the community,” Mamburu acknowledged.

Mukwevho and Mmbidi appeared in the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. The case was postponed to August 28 and they are still in custody.
