The Tshamutumbu police believe they have broken a major cable theft ring after the arrest of three male suspects aged between 17 and 21 last Monday.
According to Constable Peggy Ramavhunga, Tshamutumbu police spokeswoman, police were on patrol at about 04:15 at Muswodi when they stopped a suspicious white Golf with registration number BNY 218 L and made the big find.
Ramavhunga said police were conducting a stop-and-search operation along the main Muswodi road when they pulled off the car and requested to search the car and the occupants. Upon searching the car, 17 rolls of copper wire and some suspected stolen items which the suspects could not account for were found. The suspects were arrested after questioning.
The suspects appeared briefly at the Mutale Magistrate court on the same day of their arrest. Their case was postponed to September 16. Two accused are in custody, and the 17-year- old suspect was released to his parents.
Ramavhunga commended the police for a job well done. “We will not tolerate lawlessness in our area and criminals should just know that they will have nowhere to hide as we will hunt them and put behind bars where they belong,” she said. She said the police will continue fighting crime to make villages a safer place for all to live.
