A newly constituted NGO, styled A Helping Hand, is now operational in Louis Trichardt, reaching out to feed destitute people in and around the town.

“We aim at regularly providing a well-prepared meal to destitute people, including the large number of refugees in our town – not only to alleviate hunger on humanitarian grounds, but also to prevent crime which can be caused by desperation,” says Mr Gladstone Dzukuso, executive director of A Helping Hand.

Well-known philanthropist and municipal councillor Amie Chhaya this week announced steps to strengthen A Helping Hand. He pledged a monthly donation of 80kg maize meal, together with a monthly bakkie load of fire wood and a box of green bar soap to the organizers.

“Especially now in the month of Ramadan, we must focus on the plight of the needy and the importance of doing something about alleviating the burden of poverty,” he said. Councillor Chhaya also undertook to urge Council to focus attention on the need to shelter all destitute people, including the growing number of Zimbabweans.

He appealed to all businesspeople in Louis Trichardt to contribute to a worthwhile cause. A Helping Hand is in need of a well-equipped kitchen space plus equipment and utensils.

Mr Mfudzi Wamambo, assistant executive director, suggested that Council consider making space at the Tshikota Lodge available for the temporary accommodation of destitute people.

For more information, Gladstone can be contacted on 078 230 9710 and Mfudzi on 078 865 1887.
