Sick man claims that doctor is delaying treatment

News  Date: 19 September 2008

The man who made headlines earlier this year when he claimed that Siloam Hospital was refusing him treatment is at it again. He claims a certain doctor at Siloam is delaying his treatment at Polokwane Hospital, after he was not booked for transport with others to Polokwane Hospital on September 1.

He said his appointment with the doctor has been rescheduled to November 6. “This amounts to a death sentence to me. My health is worsening on a daily basis and delaying my treatment is the ultimate penalty to me,” he said.

Mr Peter Madzhali (49) from Rabali is now a shadow of his former self. He cannot even move, as he has painful piles and is thinning every day. He said after his plight was publicized by the media, the hospital sprang into action and organized specialized treatment, but this is not working either as it seems someone is trying to sabotage his road to recovery.

He said after the exposé, the hospital authorities were very cross with him and the delay seems to be a way to punish him. “How can they deny a dying man like me treatment? The longer they postpone my treatment, the closer I come to death,” said the sad Madzhali. “How can they not book for my transport, and make me miss my treatment? They are really determined to see me dead,” he said.

He said he cannot do anything for himself as he is bedridden and nobody seems to care about him. “There is nothing I can do and I am beginning to lose hope. I am staring at death because no one is prepared to help me out of my predicament. Tell the world out there that I am suffering because of some individuals and I would like to see them exposed, not for my benefit alone, but even for others who might be in my predicament,” he said.

When Mirror visited him at his home at Rabali, Madzhali was still bedridden and could not even move out of the house as he was in severe pain.

He said his woes started in September last year when some pimples developed in his anal tract. “I did not take the matter seriously as I thought they would heal up fast, but they developed into painful piles,” he said. He said it continued for some days and he decided to consult doctors at the local hospital. “I was kept at Siloam Hospital for a week before they told me that they had nothing more to offer me and that I had to go back home”.

Madzhali said it was sad for him to leave the hospital while knowing that he was not completely healed. “What else could I do? I had to oblige and go back home while still in pain; the pain has been worsening ever since,” he said.

He said the pain was killing him and he has since lost a lot of weight. He said he returned to the hospital at the beginning of this year because the pain and bleeding continued. Madzhali said he recently visited the hospital and they took samples, whereupon he was discharged again without being healed.

Ms Masakona Madzhali said her son has been declared dead before his actual death. “How can they do this to my son? These people are very cruel,” she said. She said it has become extremely difficult for them to care for him and if he gets the treatment, it might ease his plight.

The spokesperson for the Department of Health, Mr Phuti Seloba, said it was uncalled for and sad to deny a sick person medication. He promised to take the matter up with the hospital in order to arrange an earlier date for him to be taken to Polokwane Hospital.
