The Limpopo Tourism and Parks Board embarked on a road show as part of its tourism month celebrations during an event held at the Louis Trichardt Show Grounds last Thursday.

It was in this event where Grade 12 learners in tourism from various schools around the Makhado Municipal area of jurisdiction attended in numbers to be informed on tourism matters. According to the senior manager of tourism in Limpopo, Mr Xlolani Mthethwa, the Tourism Month Road Show was launched on August 19th in Polokwane as part of tourism month commemorations. “As part of the celebrations, we are intending to visit all the regions in Limpopo,” he said.

He added that they also invited learners from various schools with an aim of educating them on tourism issues. “We are also going to engage learners in the tourism schools competition where there are a lot of prizes to be won,” Mthethwa emphasized.

Addressing the learners on climate change, Dr Antoinette Letsoalo indicated that the projected climate change and related exposures are likely to affect the health status of millions of people, particularly those with low adaptation capacity. “The most vulnerable industries, settlements and societies are generally those in coastal and river flood plains. Those whose economies are loosely linked with climate-sensitive resources and those in areas prone to extreme weather events, especially where rapid urbanization is occurring.”

Outlining the future impact of climate change, Letsoalo said that in Africa by 2020, between 75 and 250 million people are projected to be exposed to an increase of water stress, due to climate change.

The theme for this year’s tourism month celebration is “re-use, reduce and recycle”
