MAKHADO - "A nation that does not care and look after its children, is a doomed nation," said the Mayor of the Makhado municipality, Cllr Rhulani Sarel Nkuzana, during his recent mayoral children’s gathering at the local showgrounds.
Following the escalating child abuse in the area, the mayoral social gathering also focused on the campaign to stop child abuse and to promote children’s rights, as set out in the country’s constitution. At least 10 learners each from different schools and crèches within the municipal area attended the function.
"Children are gifts from God, but I am surprised by people who turn around and abuse children. Too many children today are disabled due to abuse by their next of kin," the mayor explained. He also said that out of his monthly salary, he decided to contribute R1000 to the Children’s Desk. The mayor added that children need to be brought up by their parents with dignity and love.
The spokesperson of the SAPS in the Vhembe District, Capt Ailwei Mushavhanamadi, said that all people who abuse children must be reported to the police. He urged children, especially girls, to stop asking lifts from strangers. Adv Mphanama from the Department of Justice said that since the law on sexual offences was amended, anyone found guilty of having sexual intercourse with a minor (under 16 years) runs the risk receiving a lifelong prison sentence.
While others were celebrating the social gathering with the mayor, some were waiting in vain for transport to the function, from their respective destinations. Cllr Nkuzana said that mistakes do occur. "We are apologising for failing to organise transport for the children waiting at different destinations; this will never happen again."
The function that was scheduled to start at 10:00 was delayed until 11:00, due to the late arrival of the mayor. The children celebrated their day with the mayor by performing their traditional dances.
