Three men arrested on murder and assault charges

The community of Tshisahulu community is in a state of shock after a well-known Univen official, Adv Enoch Maphwanya, who is also the acting director of student affairs at the university, and two others were arrested and charged with the murder of a suspected cable thief.

Maphwanya (53) was arrested at Tshisahulu village outside Thohoyandou in Limpopo at the weekend.

It is alleged that Maphwanya and his co-accused, Victor Makumbani, 46, and Peter Ralineba, 43, abducted and killed Tshilidzi Tshilate and also attempted to murder Funani Tshifaro, after accusing them of stealing electric cables on Friday at Maphwanya’s Grinding Mill business. They were allegedly both abducted in full view of other people at a local beer garden, who did nothing to protect them.

The three briefly appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Monday and were remanded in custody, pending further investigations.

Limpopo police spokesman in Vhembe, Capt Mashudu Malelo confirmed the arrest of the three and said they would again appear in court today (17th) for a formal bail application.
