Seven people died and several were injured in a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a taxi early on Friday morning north of Louis Trichardt.

The SAPS are investigating a case of culpable homicide after a bus and a Quantum taxi collided head-on along the N1 road at the T-junction just north of the Verwoerd Tunnels at Wylliespoort.
Four people died instantly in the accident. Three of the five who were seriously injured later succumbed to their injuries in hospital.

According to a police report, a third vehicle, another passenger bus, which turned from the N1 into the Dzanani/Siloam road without giving way to the oncoming traffic, forced the oncoming bus from Zimbabwe to swerve to the right, colliding head-on with the taxi which was on its way to Nzhelele. Two passengers in the front seat of the bus were killed instantly. The driver was flung from the bus onto the road and sustained serious injuries.

A number of people were treated on the scene of the accident for minor injuries, while those with more serious injuries were stabilized by paramedics.

Some of the injured were taken to the Siloam hospital, while critically injured passengers were evacuated to Polokwane.

The names and ages of the deceased have not been officially released yet.
