A security guard was wounded during a daring day light robbery along the Louis Trichardt/Madombidzha Road about 4km from town on Monday. A group of four heavily armed robbers made off with an undisclosed amount of money.
As far as could be determined, the security vehicle of RRS Security, accompanied by another vehicle from the firm, was on its way back from collecting money at Limpopo Dairy. The robbers allegedly fired a number of shots, hitting both vehicles and the driver of the vehicle in front, which was transporting the money. The driver of the vehicle was wounded in the hand and thighs, prompting him to leave the road. When the vehicle came to a standstill, the robbers approached it and shot out the back window. This enabled them to get access to the money containers in the trunk.
The wounded security guard’s passenger was not injured. The occupants of the accompanying vehicle were not injured either.
After taking the money, the robbers jumped into a white Toyota Corolla and sped off. This vehicle was later found abandoned along the Ledig Road, just before the railway line. Apparently, they then boarded a white Mercedes Benz, with which they escaped in the direction of Polokwane, skipping the tollgate in the process. The police have arrested no suspects so far. They have called on anyone with information in this regard to phone them at 083 206 2294 at all times.
The wounded driver, Mr Silo Mphapantjie, was transferred to the Polokwane private hospital for further treatment. His condition was satisfactory at the time of going to press.
