News  Date: 09 April 2004

MPHEPHU (DZANANI) – Five heavily armed men got away with an undisclosed amount of money during yet another cash-in-transit heist here.

The daring robbery took place at about 10:00 on the road between Mphephu and Luvhalani on Monday, April 5.

According to the police spokesperson for the Vhembe Area, Capt Ailwei Mushavhanamadi, the five suspects, travelling in a BMW and Ford Bantam bakkie respectively, followed the Fedility security vehicle as it was transporting money on the said road. Moments later, the BMW slammed into the security vehicle, causing it to overturn.

Following the collision, a gunfight broke out between the security guards and the armed suspects. Two security guards were injured, after which their attackers took away their .38 revolvers.

It is alleged that the five robbers took four containers containing an undisclosed amount of money. They sped away soon afterwards in the Bantam bakkie, leaving the damaged BMW behind. When enquiries were made, it was found that the BMW had been stolen in Randburg on March 12 this year. One empty container was left at the scene.

Upon the police's arrival on the scene, the two injured security guards were taken to the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital for treatment.
