Moeti accused of power abuse and nepotism

THOHOYANDOU- Dark clouds are hanging over the Executive Mayor of Vhembe District Municipality, Mr Sam Moeti, as certain councillors within the Municipality are accusing him of power abuse and nepotism.

This comes after Mr Masala Makumule, who is a relative of the mayor, according to the councillors, was appointed as Technical Manager at the Municipality. They told Mirror that Makumule has no qualifications relating to his post.

According to the concerned councillors, the Technical Manager has just joined the ruling party recently to protect his post at the District Municipality. The anonymous councillors added that Makumule is being groomed by Mr Moeti to become the future Municipal Manager of the Municipality, as he is not on good terms with the present Municipal Manager, Mr Shandukani Mulovhedzi.

"The Mayor wanted former experienced Bantustan officials in his administration. He is also threatening to freeze placement of seconded officials, claiming that correct procedures were not followed. He wants to freeze the placement in order to employ his relatives and Bantustan officials, which will unsettle the Municipal Manager" said the concerned councillors.

The Executive mayor is further blamed for being silent about the councillor who is currently employed at the Phalaborwa Municipality, but who is still receiving full benefits from the Vhembe municipality.

In response to the councillors' accusations, Mr Moeti referred to all the information from the concerned councillors as non-existent allegations. "The said councillor who is with the Phalaborwa Municipality is no longer receiving benefits from us and I am not a relative to Makumule. No one is above the law; we are all bound by the law. That's what I want people with little information to understand," he said
