Family suspect arson after house is destroyed by fire

News  Date: 31 July 2009

The Shimange family of Elim Rivoni village in the Njakanjaka area was left stranded after their only house was destroyed by a fire last Friday.

According to the 39-year-old Tinyiko Grace Shimange, she was not at home when an unknown arsonist apparently set alight their only two-roomed shack. “When the incident happened, I was coming from the Elim Care Group. I only saw the fire when I was at a distance, approaching home. I thought somebody was just burning grass nearby my place, but was shocked when I arrived home to find out that the house was burning,” she said.

She added that she did not understand the motive of the arson attack, as she had no enemies. “Whoever burned my house has caused great damage to my family. I lost everything that belonged to me; from clothing to furniture and valuable items such as IDs and bank cards,” she said. The damage is estimated at R50 000.

The family is now re-lying on neighbours for a place to stay.

The spokesperson for the Waterval police, Insp Kedibone Mabatha, confirmed the incident. He said that the incident happened around seven in the evening.

The family is now appealing to the community for assistance. Anyone who can help is advised to contact Mabatha at 079 894 5467.
