Transport Department slams corruption

News  Date: 02 April 2004

VUWANI - The Limpopo Department of Transport warned that it will fire any traffic officer who is found to be receiving bribes.

On behalf of MEC Tshenuwani Farisani, the Executive Mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Sam Moeti, said that the traffic testing centres were used by the past political system to cause instability in Limpopo by promoting and creating a conducive environment that became a breeding ground for corruption.

"This corruption affected the operations of both driving schools and traffic officers, having long-term implications on the lives of our people," he said.

Moeti said that the Department of Transport will not tolerate un-roadworthy vehicles and unfit drivers who continue to use the roads through illegitimate means.

"The late Minister Dullah Omar launched the National Traffic Call Centre in Limpopo, which is used to encourage citizens of Limpopo to report good and bad behaviour on our roads, all in an endeavour to reduce the carnage on our roads," Moeti said.

The Vuwani Traffic Station is the second of the stations upgraded to accelerate service delivery to the people. Members of the surrounding villages of Tshino, Dzwerani, Elim, Valdezia, Masia, Matsila and Bungeni will access the services offered by the Vuwani traffic station easily.

"The infrastructure has been upgraded in such a way that it complies with the minimum standards as required by the Road Traffic Act.

The station will render the registration and licensing of motor vehicles and render law enforcement services.
