New guide for local bird watchers

News  Date: 02 April 2004

MAKHADO (LOUIS TRICHARDT) – Hot off the press is the new guide book on where to watch birds in the Soutpansberg and Limpopo Valley.

The booklet features accommodation establishments, roadside attractions, community projects, a road map, a full bird list and a classified section that advertises services available to the travelling birdwatcher.

This is the second edition of the popular booklet produced by the Soutpansberg/Limpopo Birding Route. The Birding Route was set up to promote the Soutpansberg and Limpopo Valley as a bird watching destination. Marketing is done both within South Africa and internationally. Already, the number of visiting birdwatchers has increased significantly, providing a boost to local tourism.

The Birding Route is broadening the economic benefits of avi-tourism to previously disadvantaged communities by providing the type of support that will best allow communities to effectively benefit from a larger marketing platform. By creating an awareness of the economic benefits of avi-tourism, the Birding Route ultimately hopes to promote the conservation of birds and natural habitats of the Soutpansberg.
