Chairperson of Makhado Local FA quits

News  Date: 02 October 2009

The chairperson of the Makhado Football Association, Mr Azwinndini Alfred Nengovhela, dropped a bombshell when he unexpectedly resigned from his position last week.

According to him, the resignation became effective on Monday last week, the day on which his resignation letter was tendered.

In the letter, Nengovhela cited personal reasons, which include studies, as the factors that influenced his resignation. Nengovhela was holding the position of deputy-chairperson of the association from 2006 until early last year, when he took over from the former chairperson, Mr Murendi Managa, who also resigned.

Although he refused to comment, insiders say Nengovhela’s resignation was influenced by the fact that so many things were happening without his knowledge, despite the fact that he was occupying the highest office in the association.

Nengovhela, or Booysen, as he was called during his heydays as a soccer player, played for several Mashau-based teams, including Mashau Hungry Tigers, Mashau Self Change and Rooiwinkel NJ Groovings, between 1981 and 1987. He was the founder-member of Mashau Hungry Lions in 1998 and the chief executive officer of NJ Groovings from 2004 until 2006. He held several positions in the Vuwani Football Association between 1998 and 2006, when the football structures were restructured in terms of the municipal demarcations.

He was quick to say “no” when asked whether he had also resigned from his position as the marketing officer for the Makhado Municipality Sports Council. Nengovhela is equipped with a diploma in Sports Development Administration, a qualification he acquired from the University of Pretoria.
